摘要:This presentation focuses on the discovery, design and development of methodologies, with a long-term focus on electrochemical synthesis. The growing availability of electrons from renewable sources and the challenges of storing electricity either on or off grid has led to renewed opportunities for electrochemical methodologies which can exploit these excess electrons for chemical conversions.  Competition within the chemical industry is increasing internationally and innovation remains a key route to address sophisticated, demanding and environmentally-conscious consumers.  These factors have led to a dramatic re-emergence of interest in chemical synthesis using electrochemical methods, however, there remains many technological challenges and poor fundamental physical understanding on how to control these notoriously complex processes.

This presentation focuses on the key materials, modelling and instrumentation required to explore electrosynthetic pathways over a wide range of temperature and pressure regimes. The proposal addresses these challenges using multi-scale analysis, exploiting numerical modelling in combination with innovative electroanalytical approaches and rapid prototyping methods for experimental reactor development. We exploit this underpinning scientific base to explore a number of electrosynthetic targets which will be presented in the talk.

报告者简介:ACF gained his PhD in Oxford and has worked in Cambridge for 15 years where is the founder of the Centre for Research in Electrochemical, Science and Technology (CREST) in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (CEB), Currently I am the Director of the Centre for Research in Electrochemical Science, Engineering and Technology.  My centre has recently expanded to establish laboratories in the Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE) in Singapore, where I am a PI for the Cambridge CARES activity and the Cambridge University Virtual laboratory, located in the International Centre for Soft Matter. CREST currently accommodates 8 post docs, 15 PhD students and typically runs 10 MPhil/UG research projects across the laboratories annually.

CREST research has led to the publication of in excess of 200 academic papers in leading international journals, including Nature energy, ACS journals, Adv. Mat. and our work has recently been recognized by the international award of a Newton Trust Prize. Our research has also been demonstrated at international events (eg London Design Festival, Salon Satellite, Milan design festival), presented at international conferences and featured in popular science publications such as New Scientist.  As a passionate educator in my field, I have written the Oxford University Press, textbook ‘Electrode Dynamics’, founded a series of international Advanced Electrochemistry Techniques (AET) training programme for postgraduate students and industrialists, founded an international Summer School programme (which runs annually between Beijing, Singapore and Cambridge), with a focus on undergraduate students considering PhD studies in chemical technology, I have run a popular Part II Electrochemical Engineering module in the Cambridge Tripos and also acted as consultant to major multinational companies such as Johnson Matthey and Schlumberger. I have recently Co-founded a company in the UK called STEMNOVATE which currently has its laboratories located at Babraham Science Park in Cambridge.
